The Pfeifer House is one of Tahoe's oldest restaurants, and is full of the flavors of Germany. While there, you may even be able to convince yourself you are in Europe. It is a perfect place to visit after your alpine adventures in North Tahoe, with selections of schnitzel, goulash, bratwurst, and beef. Full bar with good wine selections. You can find Pfeifer House just 1/4 mile North of the 'Y' in Tahoe City on HW 89. Closed Monday and Tuesday, and during some off-seasons. Reservations advised.

The Bridge Tender used to occupy the space next to the Dam where the Truckee River starts to flow; this is now a park. They have moved into a new building across the street. Gone are the trees growing through the building, but the Bridge Tender retained its charm with a nice wooden bar, decent bar food, reasonable prices, and good times for all.

Technically, the River Ranch is probably closer to Alpine Meadows than Tahoe City, but it's a popular spot for people who want to take the 3 or 4 mile drive or raft trip to sit by the river and enjoy lunch in the sun. The River Ranch is at the base of the Alpine Meadows entrance on 89, serving cocktails and delicious entrees including Elk Loin and Venison in a warm, comfortable room. During summer, they often have live entertainment outside on their deck.

Open for morning snacks, coffee and afternoon lunch, Tahoe House is worth a visit if you are looking for a snack or bakery item. The atmosphere is cozy, and there is plenty of room to just hang out, read, have a sandwich and enjoy a coffee. Our pick: Try a Jamaican Rum Ball; we rarely pass up an opportunity to stop for one. Black Bear Tavern
2.5 South of the Y at Tahoe City, West Shore's Black Bear is an excellent choice if you are looking for fine cuisine in romantic, rustic 'Old Tahoe' style in a warm atmosphere. The menu includes some exciting game meats and wines. So go on in, enjoy the fire, and soak up some West Shore charm.
